JIPMER MBBS 2019: The registration process for the MBBS entrance examination will start by the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Puducherry (JIPMER) from today, March 6. The medical aspirants can submit the online application at jipmer.edu.in. The exam is scheduled to be conducted on June 2 (Sunday).

The duration of the course is 4 years and 6 months, followed by 1 year of compulsory rotatory internship for the award of a degree. A total of 200 seats are available with 150 in JIPMER, Puducherry while 50 in JIPMER, Karaikal.

Eligibility criteria
Educational qualification:

— Aspirants should have passed the higher/senior secondary examination or the Indian School Certificate Examination (ISCE) which is equivalent to 10+2 higher/senior secondary examination after a period of 12 years study, the last two years of such study comprising physics, chemistry, biology/ bio-technology or any other elective with English at a level not less than the core course for English as prescribed by NCERT.

— They must have passed in the subjects of physics, chemistry, biology/ bio-technology and English individually and must have obtained a minimum of 60 per cent marks (50 per cent for reserved categories) taken together in physics, chemistry, biology/ bio-technology.

Those who are appearing in the qualifying examination in March/ April 2019 and whose results have not yet been declared can also apply.

Age limit: The age of the candidate should be minimum of 17 years.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has come up with a new policy to address the anomalies in board question papers. The CBSE is presently holding board examination for Class 10 and 12 students. Lakhs of students appear for the board examination from about 5000 examination centres in India and in 25 countries.

“In case, if any anomaly is noticed after Question Paper is administered on the day of the examination, it is not possible to communicate the solution of the same to all the centres,” the board said in a detailed policy document.

Therefore, the CBSE has introduced a three-step mechanism to address the issues of anomalies in question papers.

1. Observations are obtained from subject experts on the day of examination.

2. Observations on the Question Paper are obtained from all schools within 24 Hrs of the conduct of the examination.

3. Information received within 24 hours of the conduct of examination from other sources is also taken into consideration.

“All observations are compiled and provided to the group preparing Marking Schemes to make the provision to address the anomaly in such a manner that students interest is protected,” the board has stated in the notification.

The survey was carried out by Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), which conducts GMAT- the qualifying test for MBA admissions in United States. 1087 graduate business programs taught in 363 universities were the sample set for this survey.

There was a 7% decline in the MBA applicants from India, according to the survey.

At the same time, there was an increase of 8.9% for the Asia-Pacific region, 7.7% rise for Canada and 3.2% for Europe. While the course is still opted by the students, USA is not as preferred as it was previously. This reveals that Indian students are seen to prefer Europe, Asia-Pacific as well as Canada for Master’s in Business.

Along with this, the Asia-Pacific region has seen a rise in applications from not only Indian but also a significant amount of international students.

While the universities in United States are eager to on-board international talent for their MBA programs, the high cost of studying in United States along with volatile VISA policy for Indians might be one of the reasons why Indian students are opting for countries other than United States.

The MBA program has most applicants who are working professionals wanting to add to their experience with a master’s degree. Since the rate of employment for graduate individuals in India is increasing, hence pursuing a master’s degree by quitting existing jobs might not be a top choice for Indians, going forward.

“Non-US Programs are still generating interest among the students, but the opportunity-cost being higher in USA, there’s a dip in the US applications” said Sangeet Chowfla, the CEO  and President of GMAC.

According to experts, this is not a positive change for United States. The country for its steady economic growth needs more diversity and international talent and international individuals need to be given more liberty to study and work in USA.

Better VISA policies and decrease in the overall cost for pursuing MBA in USA can change the scenario, going ahead.

The CBSE has advised students and parents to be aware of any rumours on social media ahead of board examinations and not panic. “It has been noticed in the past that certain unscrupulous elements spread rumours by posting fake videos and messages on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms, obviously with the intention of spreading confusion and panic among students, parents, schools and public,” the CBSE Controller said in a public notice.

“Persons involved in such activities are warned and advised to restrain themselves from such activities. In case, any such information comes to the notice of the CBSE, immediate necessary actions will be taken as per law,” he added.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has also appealed public in general to cooperate with it for the smooth conduct of exams by not participating in spreading of rumours and baseless information. The CBSE Class 12 exams began on February 15 and will conclude on April 3. Class 10 exams began on February 21 and will end on March 29.

JEE Advanced 2019: Engineering aspirants take note! The exam date for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) has been announced by the Joint Admission Board (JAB) at jeeadv.ac.in. Candidates who successfully qualify the JEE MAin 2019 examination which is scheduled to take place in the month of April can then appear for the JEE Advanced paper. The official website of JEE advanced currently displays a message saying, “The JEE (Advanced) 2019 will be held on Sunday, May 19, 2019. The entire JEE (Advanced) 2019 Examination will be conducted in fully computer-based test mode.”

IIT Advanced is conducted every year for candidates who qualify the JEE Mains paper. It is conducted by the IITs under the guidance of the Joint Admission Board (JAB) 2019. The exam is conducted to judge a candidate’s performance according to which he/she is shortlisted for admission to the Bachelor’s, Integrated Master’s and Dual Degree programs (entry at the 10+2 level) in all the IITs. The Joint Admission Board 2019 takes the final decision as far as all matters related to the JEE (Advanced) 2019 and admission to IITs is concerned.

Candidates can appear for the JEE Advanced paper only after they clear the Joint Entrance Examination JEE(Main) paper that is set to be conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in the month of April 2019. Candidates who are interested but still have not applied for the examination can visit the official website of JEE Main now at jeemain.nic.in to fill the application form. The Registration process was activated by NTA earlier this month and the same will continue until March 7, 2019. The exam will be conducted across centres from April 7, 2019 to April 20, 2019.

CBSE Board exam 2019: Class 12 starts on February 15 and Class 10 starts on February 21

This serves as a ray of hope for those unable to afford the expensive coaching that students need for scoring these exams.

According to the latest update, the entrance exams like NEET and JEE Main will now be conducted by NTA- National Testing Agency. These exams were previously conducted by CBSE- the central board of secondary education.

From 2018, NEET and JEE Main will be held online and the government had equipped 2697 practice centers that will enable students to practice the online format examinations. These practice centres will be operational from 8^th of September 2018. Students will be able to take the mock-tests offered prior to the actual examinations.

Starting 2019, these centers are also set to provide free coaching to the students appearing for JEE Main and NEET. The coaching will especially benefit the rural and semi-urban students who cannot afford or access good quality training for the examinations.  

This will serve as a blow to the expensive private coaching institutes but will benefit the students.

The coaching is proposed to begin in May 2019.

NEET 2019: If you are a grade 12 student, you are probably studying long hours, gearing up for your board and competitive exams. Once you have completed the questions for the day, go back and analyse your incorrect answers. Revise necessary topics. This will boost your scores in the next test.

Third month: Take mock tests and all India level test series to know where you stand

This is when you start taking one mock test every day. Spend 3 hours on the mock test at the same time as your NEET exam. This helps train your brain to concentrate for a longer duration of time.

Focus on answering as accurately as you can. It isn’t important to attempt every question, but ensure that you don’t lose marks on incorrect answers.

Take all India level mock tests to find out where you stand as compared to lakhs of other students.

Once you take the test, spend the rest of your day analysing your mistakes and revising weak concepts.

You don’t have time to revise the entire syllabus – just ensure that with every paper, you don’t repeat your mistakes.

When you start taking tests, you might not directly hit a very high score. Remember, you have close to two months to work on your weaknesses and improve your score. With more practice, you will manage time better and develop answer strategies that suit you best.

JEE Advanced 2019 Eligibility Criteria

In order to be eligible for JEE Advanced 2019, candidates need to fulfill the JEE Main 2019 performance criteria, age limit, attempts limit, qualifying exam year criteria, and admission in IIT earlier condiction.

Eligibility criteria for JEE Advanced 2019 applicable for Indian nationals including PIO / OCI are as follows:

1. Performance in JEE Main 2019: Candidate should be among top 2,24,000 performers in JEE Main 2019 paper 1. This figure may increase if there are “tied” ranks/scores in any category.
2. Age: Candidate should be born on or after October 01, 1994 (five years relaxation to SC, ST, PwD candidates).

JEE Advanced 2019 Registration

The registration will begin two days after JEE Main 2019 result is declared. Registration will start online at www.jeeadv.ac.in. To register online, the aspirants will have to provide their basic information. Once the registration part is over, the students will have to log in and proceed to fill in other necessary information in the JEE Advanced 2019 Application Form. In the JEE Advanced 2019 online Application, the students need to provide the basic data and the choices of the cities for the examination. Also, you will have to upload scanned images of requisite documents as per the specification.

Lastly, the students will have to pay the registration fee through Online mode. After the candidates have successfully submitted the JEE Advanced Application Form, it is advised that they should take a print out of it for future reference.

JEE Advanced 2019 Exam Pattern

Only two things in JEE Advanced are certain: online mode and 3 hours each for paper 1 and paper 2.

There are two papers namely paper 1 and paper 2 in JEE Advanced; both are compulsory. Their exam pattern is not revealed before the exam actually takes place. Hence candidates can only look at past year papers and prepare with the mindset that anything may come in exam.

A Thillai Rajan, a professor at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, has created a platform to help start-ups reach incubators at the Indian institutes. He has created a business called ‘YNOS Venture Engine’ that would help catalyse deep technology start-ups and adoption of technology and Innovation in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

Faculty members from different institutes would be part of the YNOS platform, which would enable entrepreneurs across India or even globally, to identify faculty member(s) they would like to work. Once an entrepreneur expresses interest in interacting with a faculty, YNOS would facilitate the interaction.

Professor Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Institute Professor, IIT-Madras, said, “Prof Thillai Rajan has been publishing the much-acclaimed annual reports on Indian venture industry for a decade now. YNOS Venture Engine has developed a new platform for the entrepreneurs to leverage the expertise of the academic and research community in the country.”

A total of 128 faculty members from IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, IIIT Bangalore, BITS Pilani, IIT Hyderabad, IITDM Kanchipuram, IIT Ropar, IIT Mandi, IIT Palakkad, NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal and NIT Raipur have so far joined hands in this initiative.

Speaking about the benefits of this initiative to the Indian startup community, Thillai Rajan, said, “There is a strong potential for institutes of higher education to engage with startups over and above to what is currently being done. While many institutes have incubation cells to encourage faculty and students to create startups, there is tremendous scope for helping startups that are outside of their institutions with their expertise and help them in bringing their innovations to market. Delphi has a tremendous potential to contribute to an important area of India’s economy by providing a direct interface between the start-ups and academia.”

While many faculty members may choose not to start on their own, they may be interested to provide oral consultation or opinion on the interesting problems that many of the startups are working on.

Thus, the platform is expected to catalyse the creation of more deep tech or deep innovation start-ups and adoption of technology and innovation in SMEs.

CBSE Board Exams 2019: Things allowed inside the examination centres

The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), the UK's centralised university application system, disclosed that 4,690 students from India applied to take up courses at universities across Britain from September this year. This compares favourably to 4,470 applications last year and a considerable hike over the previous years.

While the figures do not reflect the actual number of Indian students who will be successful in their applications to be able to join these courses, they reflect an interest in the UK as a destination for higher education.

Last month, the UK's Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) had revealed that 28 per cent more Indian students enrolled on courses in the UK in the academic year 2017-18 than in 2016-17.

"It is fantastic news for the UK that the number of Indian students coming to our country appears to be on the rise. We hope to see these numbers continue to grow over coming years," said Vivienne Stern, Director, Universities UK International.

"Indian students are a vital part of the international university communities that we are so proud of in the UK. Indian students bring diverse perspectives to our campuses, new ideas to our classrooms and essential skills to our workforce," she said.

The UCAS data this week shows that a total of 561,420 students applied for a UK university course this year, almost 2,500 more than at the equivalent point last year, marking the first increase in three years.

The hike is largely down to a record number of applicants from outside the EU standing at 63,690, an increase of 9 per cent. The number of applicants from the EU increased by 1 per cent, to 43,890.

"In this time of uncertainty, it's welcome news to see more EU and international students wanting to come and study in the UK," said UCAS' Chief Executive Clare Marchant.

China maintained its lead as the largest source country of non-EU student applicants, with 15,880 applications, up from 11,920 in 2018 and followed by Hong Kong at 5,100.

India with 4,690 applications, the US with 4,050 and Singapore with 3,060 complete the top five non-EU countries list of student applications for the UK this year.

The figures are based on analysis of undergraduate applications received at UCAS by the January 15 deadline.

Meanwhile, Universities UK, the representative body for leading UK universities, said it will carry on campaigning for a student visa regime that makes the country even more attractive as a higher education destination.

It has welcomed some of the UK government's recent post-Brexit visa proposals to make it easier for students from outside the UK to remain in the country and look for work after they graduate.

Under the proposed changes, undergraduate and Masters students will be able to stay in the UK to look for work for six months after graduating. They will also have three months before graduating during which they can find work and change from a study visa to a work visa.

International graduates will be given two years after graduating during which they can apply to switch their UK study visa to UK work visa from outside the UK.

Integrated Professional Competence Course (IPCC) is the second level of the Chartered Accountancy (CA) course that is conducted by the ICAI across various centres in India. The Robert Bosch Center for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (RBC-DSAI) has been inaugurated at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras today, February 6 2019. Bosch will invest Rs 20 crore over five years in the centre that aims to work on multidisciplinary interactions with government, academic, research and industrial collaborators on core challenges in Data Science (DS) and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

There are basic issues in the way we collect and share data; these need to be solved in a collective and open-sourced manner. To address this issue, said B. Ravindran, faculty at IIT-Madras who heads RBC-DSAI. He adds, “The centre, in addition to fundamental research, will create a portal of curated India-specific data sets that are easy to access and interpret through a set of open tools and interfaces.”

RBC-DSAI, claims IIT-Madras, has the largest Deep Reinforcement Learning group in India. Deep Reinforcement Learning is at the cutting edge of the new AI revolution and is responsible for the many path-breaking developments in AI recently. Researchers at RBC-DSAI are also looking at networked data across different disciplines – biology, transportation, water distribution, process modelling, online social media, telecom, and reaction networks.

The centre will undertake foundational research in many areas of AI and Data Science, namely deep learning, reinforcement learning, network analytics, interpretable machine learning, and domain aware AI. The areas of activity include research projects, knowledge management and dissemination, outreach projects, and setting up collaborative facilities and laboratories.

Applied research will begin in four verticals: manufacturing analytics, financial analytics, smart cities, systems biology and health care. Several technologies currently require large datasets to improve their accuracy and to adopt these technologies for the Indian context.

“The centre’s mandate requires interaction with industry and other universities, including international student and faculty exchanges. The objective is to advance scientific innovation for societal benefit,” said Bhaskar Ramamurthi, director, IIT Madras.

“Artificial Intelligence is a core technology for all areas of connected life – from connected mobility to buildings, factories, and cities. The expertise of our Indian engineers contributes to expanding the AI skills set of Bosch,” said Michael Bolle, member of Bosch’s board of management, during the opening ceremony.

"Cheating is an individual malpractice. This year we are doing something special to bring down the instances of cheating. We will be issuing a module to the schools by next week. It talks about why cheating is unethical and immoral. It will have case studies to that effect," the official said requesting anonymity.

According to media reports, the number of cases of cheating during CBSE exams doubled in 2017 from the previous year, rising from 56 in 2016 to 119 in 2017. The official said the number is around a similar figure in 2018 also.

The official also assured of leak-proof exams this year.

CBSE's reputation of being a formidable examiner was delivered a blow in 2018 when question papers of Mathematics and Economics for Class 10 and 12 respectively were leaked to the students before the exams. The fiasco resulted in re-conducting of the Economics paper for Class 12 students.

"I cannot reveal the security mechanism we have brought in. But we have put in place a system which will help us identify any malpractice if it takes place. The system has been strengthened at all levels," said the official.

The official also debunked reports that the board is conducting exams early this year due to general election, saying its "completely wrong" and that early exams have nothing to do with the elections.

"We are conducting exams a little early this year at the instruction of the Delhi High Court, which had said that the schools results should not coincide in anyway with the Delhi University admission. To that effect, the results this year will be announced early in May," the official said.

Candidates need to note that in addition to the time indicated on the timetable for writing the paper, 15 minutes time is given for reading the question paper. According to the information released by the board, the Question Papers for practical examinations may be distributed to the candidates at 8.45 A.M. to enable them to start writing at 9.00 A.M. In addition to this, the Question Papers for theory examinations may be distributed to the candidates at 1.45 P.M. to enable them to start writing at 2.00 P.M.

Note: Practical Examination of Physical Education Paper 2 may be held on any convenient day.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Hyderabad will launch a full-fledged B Tech program in Artificial Intelligence (AI) from the coming academic year (2019-2020). With this, the institute claims it has become the first Indian educational institution to offer a full-fledged B Tech programme in AI. IIT-Hyderabad is also the third institute globally after US-based Carnegie Mellon University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The course will have an intake of around 20 students and the admission will be done on the basis of the JEE-Advanced score. Taught by the department of AI, IIT-Hyderabad, the course syllabus will comprise of the study of algorithms from the computer science department, signal processing from the electrical engineering department, robotics from mechanical engineering department and mathematical foundations. The course will also focus on application verticals such as healthcare, agriculture, smart mobility, among many others.

Further, the ethical impact of AI and its technologies on areas such as privacy, bias and related issues will also be a key component of this B Tech program.

IIT-Hyderabad is already offering an M Tech program in Artificial Intelligence – Machine Learning and M.Tech. in Data Science.

UB Desai, director, IIT Hyderabad, said, “The basic aim is to create a complete ecosystem for Artificial Intelligence Academics and Research at IIT Hyderabad. This involves B.Tech, M Tech and different minor programs in AI. Moreover, the R&D will be strongly entwined with academics.”

Students pursuing other degrees such as B.Tech. in chemical engineering or mechanical engineering can also pursue a minor in AI as well from the coming academic year onwards.

The Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) is all set to conduct the online Common Admission Test (CAT-2019) for admission to various undergraduate/ postgraduate courses on April 6 and April 7, 2019. The interested candidates can apply for various courses from January 30, 2019 on the official website, admissions.cusat.ac.in.

The last date to apply for the same is February 28, 2019. Apart from this, the applications for various MTech courses could be submitted till April 21, 2019.

About admission tests:

• The admission test for MSc, LLM, MVoc, MCA, BVoc, LLB, BTech (Lateral Entry) will be conducted on April 6.

• Those who wish to pursue BTech, MA (Hindi, Applied Economics), BBA, LLB, BCom, LLB, MCA/MSc (Computer Science) (Lateral Entry), LLM (IP) PhD, LLM (IPR) PhD, the exam will be held on April 7.

• The application for MPhil, PhD and diploma courses will be available from the respective departments.

Examination centres:

The CUSAT will be conducted at 28 centres across the country and also in Dubai.

Eligibility criteria:

1. The candidates belonging to Kerala SC (KSC) and Kerala ST (KST) communities are eligible for applying.

2. For all undergraduate programmes, the candidate should have passed class 12 or an equivalent exam from a recognised board. Candidates need to score at least 45 per cent in PCM (Physics, Chemistry Mathematics).

Region wise topper:

Thiruvananthapuram region recorded the overall highest pass percentage with 99.87 per cent, followed by Chennai which recorded a pass percentage of 99.69. The Class 12 Board results were also announced on May 21 and the region got the highest pass percentage in it also.

Number of students appeared:

A total of 14,91,29,3 students had registered for the exam, out of which 88,82,52 were boys and 60,30,41 were girls. Out of the total registered candidates, 14,89,02,1 had appeared for the exam, out of which 88,67,41 were boys and 60,22,80 were girls.

Girls once again performed better than boys, with the overall pass percentage of boys being 96.11 per cent, and that of girls being 96.36 per cent.
